Japan’s first private wet lab on university campus launched in Fukuoka

#lifeciences, #biotech, #ecosystem

Fukuoka Real Estate has officially opened f-labs Kyushu University Hospital, a rental wet lab and life science incubation facility located on the campus of Kyushu University Hospital in Fukuoka. This marks the first time where a private company has established a rental laboratory within a national university hospital campus in Japan.

As of its official January launch more than 50 companies are already participating in its ecosystem, forming a new hub for life science research, development, and commercialization.

Although Fukuoka has a strong base of medical and pharmaceutical institutions and one of the major Japanese startup communies, the limited availability of urban wet lab facilities has been a long-standing challenge. f-labs Kyushu University Hospital addresses this gap, offering excellent access to Hakata Station, Fukuoka Airport, and the city center.

The six-story building features the incubation hub Fukuoka Innovation Lab on the first floor, which includes coworking spaces, offices, meeting rooms, event areas, and a shared wet lab available from a single bench with minimal initial investment. The shared lab is equipped with 34 types of common research instruments, enabling startups to begin experiments quickly and efficiently.

Floors two and three host advanced medical research centers affiliated with Kyushu University Hospital, while floors four through six provide flexible rental labs and offices.
