KDDI Successfully Demonstrates "4-Dimensional Resource Control Technology" for 6G

#5g, #telecommunications

KDDI Research Institute successfully developed and demonstrated "4-Dimensional Resource Control Technology" in collaboration with Nokia Bell Laboratories on April 20, 2026. The technology achieves the world's first integration of high-quality communication with base station power reduction in commercial equipment by combining four resource dimensions. Field tests showed the technology can reduce base station power consumption by up to 40% while delivering 4x faster communication speeds at equivalent power levels to current 5G systems.

This achievement directly addresses Japan's critical 6G research priorities. The technology satisfies the "ultra-low power consumption" requirement outlined in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' 6G technology strategy. The research demonstrates Japan's commitment to developing sustainable, energy-efficient next-generation networks while maintaining communication quality. KDDI and Nokia plan to pursue international standardization of the technology through 3GPP 6G standards.

The successful demonstration represents a significant milestone for 2030s Society 5.0 implementation. As 6G deployment approaches target timelines around 2030, energy efficiency becomes increasingly critical given projected traffic growth and environmental concerns. This technology positions Japan's telecommunications industry at the forefront of sustainable 6G development, essential for meeting global climate commitments while supporting advanced digital services.
