NTT Docomo Launches Starlink Service

#5g, #space

NTT Docomo announced the launch of Docomo Starlink Direct, enabling direct satellite-to-smartphone communication via Starlink, beginning April 27, 2026. The service is accessible in outdoor areas without 4G/5G ground coverage where there is clear line of sight to satellites. The launch represents Japan's telecommunications industry commitment to comprehensive coverage through satellite integration.

This announcement follows SoftBank's service launch on April 10, 2026, establishing competitive momentum among Japan's major carriers to deploy satellite direct-to-cell (D2C) technology. The service supports text messaging and data communication, with voice call functionality planned for later in 2026. Docomo's participation in the D2C service ecosystem demonstrates the universal strategic importance of satellite connectivity for Japan's digital infrastructure.

The deployment of Starlink-based D2C services by multiple carriers signifies a fundamental shift in Japan's approach to universal service obligation. Rather than relying solely on terrestrial infrastructure to reach all areas, Japanese telecom operators are integrating space-based assets to ensure continuous connectivity during disasters and in naturally difficult-to-serve regions, directly supporting national resilience goals.
