Oral Mucosal Image Analysis System "Mucosight AI" Receives Regulatory Approval from Osaka University and Morita Tokyo

Osaka University and medical device manufacturer Morita Tokyo developed "Mucosight AI," an oral mucosal image analysis system that received manufacturing and sales approval from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as a software medical device. NVIDIA provided technical expertise and computing resources for AI model development. The system analyzes oral cavity images captured by general dentists to identify four diseases—oral cancer, leukoplakia, benign tumors, and oral ulcers—in approximately 30 seconds. With a sensitivity of 94.6% for recommending specialist referral, the system aims to improve early detection of oral cavity diseases. In Japan, where approximately 8,500 people die annually from oral and pharyngeal cancer, the system uses AI to visualize easily-overlooked lesions in general dental clinics and supports appropriate referrals to specialist facilities.
