On June 30, 2026, the Japanese government's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications adopted the "J-LEO" (Low Earth Orbit Satellite Infrastructure Development Project) proposal submitted by RAST, with Rakuten Mobile as co-proponent. This 150-billion-yen subsidy project aims to develop Japan's independent satellite communication infrastructure by partnering with US satellite operator AST SpaceMobile. Rakuten Mobile plans to launch "Rakuten Strongest Satellite Service" by year-end 2026.
