Starlink Satellite Communications to be Introduced at Japanese Embassies for Emergency Backup

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to introduce SpaceX's satellite communication service "Starlink" at Japanese diplomatic missions (embassies and consulates) in fiscal 2026 to ensure communication during emergencies and disasters. The service will be used as a communication channel between Japanese missions and the government, while also being made available to Japanese citizens abroad. The initiative aims to prepare for situations where terrestrial networks become unusable due to conflicts or disasters, providing an alternative satellite-based backup system. This strengthens Japan's ability to continue diplomatic operations and protect citizens even during political instability or natural calamities.
