OIST: Building a Science and Innovation Hub in Okinawa

OIST Innovation

OIST Innovation drives technology development and commercialization at the university, aiming to accelerate economic growth in Okinawa and beyond. It supports innovators through a comprehensive range of programs, networks, and resources, fostering both local and global collaboration. By leveraging world-class research, infrastructure, and an interdisciplinary environment, OIST Innovation transforms laboratory discoveries into impactful innovations.

OIST Innovation Accelerator

One of the central pillars of this effort is the OIST Innovation Accelerator. The program is designed for entrepreneurs who want more than a conventional accelerator experience. As OIST describes it, the OIST Innovation Accelerator is not a traditional accelerator program. It combines entrepreneurship training, a boot camp competition, and a startup incubator into a single platform for founders building innovative companies.

As Okinawa’s first global startup accelerator program, it offers entrepreneurs from around the world the opportunity to incubate their startups in Japan. Participants receive support that can include funding of up to 10,000,000 Japanese yen, personalized coaching, introductions to investors, and access to state-of-the-art lab facilities and specialized equipment on the OIST campus.

OIST Innovation Incubator

Complementing the accelerator is the OIST Innovation Incubator, a physical hub for early-stage deep-tech startups. The incubator is equipped with shared offices, equipment, and laboratories, providing entrepreneurs with an environment in which they can assess the potential of their businesses and develop prototypes.

The incubator is more than a workspace. It is also designed as a community space for innovation, bringing together startups, experts, supporters, and companies seeking collaboration with OIST. In this way, the incubator supports not only product development and business validation but also network building and interdisciplinary exchange that are essential to deep-tech entrepreneurship.

OIST-Lifetime Ventures Fund

The OIST-Lifetime Ventures Fund is managed by Lifetime Ventures in collaboration with OIST to invest in world-class entrepreneurs, leveraging OIST’s research and network in Japan and globally. It aims to deliver impactful, science-based deep-tech solutions in sectors that include healthtech, the future of work, sustainable living, and the blue economy.

OIST Innovation Network (INO)

The OIST Innovation Network (INO) is a platform for industry to build relationships with OIST faculty, researchers, and students and to gain valuable insights into the university’s cutting-edge research, education, and innovation activities. Companies, investors, and entrepreneurs are invited to apply for membership.

INO offers two levels of membership. The benefits and annual membership fees are listed below. The program runs from April 1 to March 31 each year.
