The government's planned "Global Startup Campus" facility in central Tokyo is expected to cost 97 billion yen in construction expenses, more than double initial estimates revealed on June 17. During Diet deliberations, the government explained it had expanded the project scope, increasing floor area by 1.8 times.
The facility will be built on state-owned land between Ebisu and Nakameguro stations (former site of the National Institute for Defense Studies) and operated by a designated organization called the "Advanced Technology Research Achievement Utilization Promotion Organization." The government justifies the project to support Japan's relatively lagging startup ecosystem by creating "a world window and domestic hub facility."
The massive costs have drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers, with an additional 600 billion yen allocated for related projects, intensifying scrutiny of government spending. The government aims for Diet passage this session, with detailed project design to follow.
