Fujitsu (https://www.nikkei.com/nkd/company/?scode=6702) is collaborating with the RIKEN research institute and others to develop a superconducting quantum computer with world-leading computational power by fiscal year 2030. This will be achieved by improving cooling methods and other challenges to minimize malfunctions. Quantum computing technology, applicable to drug discovery and materials development, is being fiercely developed primarily by the US and China. Its importance for domestic production is increasing from an economic security perspective.
Fujitsu will develop a new machine with around 250 “logical qubits” – the metric indicating quantum computing power—surpassing by 25% the model currently under development by IBM, due for completion in 2029.
